GBIF BID (Specimen Digitization Project)

The National Museum of Kenya together with 5 other African Museums has secured some funding from the European Union through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) to digitize select groups of insects. This is a project called African Insect Atlas: unleashing the potential of insects in conservation and sustainability research in Africa. Implementation is currently ongoing within the Section of Invertebrates Zoology.

Once complete, the generated specimen data will be available for consumption by many end users. The partners include Madagascar Biodiversity Center, Botswana National Museum, Natural History Museum of the Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique, The Albany Museum, South Africa and Natural History Museum Zimbabwe. They recently met at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi to chart the way forward in the project implementation.
