Centre for Biodiversity PDF Print E-mail
One of the newest research sections of the museum, the Centre for Biodiversity co-ordinates the activities of other units as well as undertaking its own work in this field of interest. Well before the current global interest in biological diversity arose, the National Museums was conducting research, monitoring and organizing training aimed at conserving such resources in Kenya. The museum's extensive biological collections, with specimens dating back to a century or more, record diversity across the plant and animal kingdoms. The Centre addresses conservation at three levels of biodiversity: Genetic/Molecular, Species and Ecosystems and relates directly to the past activities and expertise of the museum's departments.

The Centre's core programmes which presently include the development of a Biodiversity Database, a Wetlands Identification and Management Programme, the Coastal Forest Conservation Programme, the Elangata Wuas Ecosystem Management Programme and the Marine Science Programme are undertaken in collaboration with other agencies as well as museum departments.
